This file provides procedures for installing Virex to computers that CANNOT BE RESTARTED with the master Virex disks as shipped. The sections below discuss the background of why these procedures are necessary, and how to install Virex on uninfected or infected machines. These steps are only for users which have been unable to restart their Macintosh with the master Virex disks.
BACKGROUND
In the past, Apple Computer, Inc. released a new version of its system software each time a new Macintosh computer was introduced. Apple now updates their system software by adding files called System Enablers to the existing system software. The system software, together with the correct Enabler, contains everything needed to start up a Macintosh computer. Different Macintosh models require different Enablers, each of which requires a substantial amount of disk space.
Apple has released so many Enablers, there is not sufficient disk space on the high density/System 7 Virex disk to include ALL of them. As a result, if you have one of the newest Macintosh computers, you may not be able to boot from either Virex disk. The following instructions will allow you to work around this situation.
NOTE: It is important to scan your drives for viruses and Trojan Horses BEFORE installing Virex. This is to ensure that Virex will be installed on a virus free machine. When you are finished with the procedure for scanning and installing, follow the instructions for CREATING A CLEAN STARTUP DISK.
SCANNING AND INSTALLING
1. Start your machine from your hard drive.
2. Insert the Virex disk and double-click on the ScanStaller icon.
3. Click on the Drive button to select the drive to which you want to install Virex.
4. Click on the Scan button to scan the drive. THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!
5. Repair or delete any viruses or Trojan Horses that are detected.
NOTE: VIREX CANNOT REPAIR ACTIVE INFECTED SYSTEM FILES. IF YOUR SYSTEM FILE IS INFECTED, STOP HERE AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE SECTION "REPAIRING INFECTED SYSTEM FILES" BELOW. IF YOUR SYSTEM FILE IS NOT INFECTED, CONTINUE WITH THESE INSTRUCTIONS:
6. Click on the Install button and then the OK button to install the new Virex INIT and Virex application.
7. Click on OK when the installation is complete.
8. Click on Quit and RESTART your computer.
9. Follow the instructions for CREATING A CLEAN STARTUP DISK.
REPAIRING INFECTED SYSTEM FILES
In order to repair active infected system files, you must Restart your computer from a uninfected (clean) LOCKED disk by doing the following:
1. Start up your machine from the LOCKED Disk Tools disk which came with your Macintosh. If your Macintosh did not come with a Disk Tools disk, or if you have misplaced it, your Macintosh dealer can provide one. When the computer has completed its startup routine, the Disk Tools disk icon will appear above your hard drive icon on the Desktop.
2. Press Command-Shift-1 to eject the startup disk.
3. Insert your LOCKED Virex disk.
4. Double-click on the ScanStaller icon. The computer will prompt you for the disk it needs at the appropriate time. You will have to swap disks numerous times before the procedure is complete. You will continue to swap disks until you see the main ScanStaller dialog.
5. Click on the Scan button. The computer will ask you to swap disks again.
6. Repair or delete any viruses or Trojan Horses. You will have to swap disks again.
7. Quit the ScanStaller and RESTART your computer.
8. Wait for the machine to finish its startup routine.
9. Insert the Virex disk, double-click on the ScanStaller icon, and follow steps 6-8 under the section SCANNING AND INSTALLING above.
NOTE: We strongly recommend that you create a startup disk that will allow you to repair future infections without having to perform the procedure listed above. Proceed to CREATING A CLEAN STARTUP DISK.
CREATING A CLEAN STARTUP DISK
1. Make a copy of your high density/System 7 Virex disk. Refer to your Macintosh User's Guide for assistance in making a copy of a diskette.
2. Insert your newly created Virex disk copy.
3. Open the System Folder of your startup disk and drag the System Enabler(s) from your startup disk to your Virex disk copy. If there is not enough room on the Virex disk copy, remove other enablers from the Virex disk copy to free up space.
4. Eject your Virex disk copy and LOCK it (a disk is locked when you can see through the tab in the upper right corner of the disk).
You have successfully created a new Virex disk which allows you to start up your computer and repair infected files.
DUO TROUBLESHOOTING: If you experience problems starting your Duo with the Virex disk, carefully read the information below:
The PowerBook Duo Enabler (v1.0) is the latest version from Apple at the time we released Virex 4.1. If your Duo won't start up, it's likely the PowerBook Duo Enabler on your hard drive is a different version than what's contained on the Virex high density/System 7 disk. To verify this, click on the System Enabler icon in your System folder and select Get Info from the File menu. Follow one of the two procedures below:
1. If the Enabler included on the Virex disk is newer than the Enabler on your hard drive (Note: If you have System Enabler 201, the PowerBook Duo Enabler on the Virex disk is newer than the Enabler on your hard drive) :
a. drag the old Enabler out of your System folder to the desktop of your hard drive.
b. drag the newer PowerBook Duo Enabler from the Virex high density/System 7 disk to
the System folder on your hard drive and restart your computer.
c. drag the old Enabler from your desktop to the trash, and empty the trash.
2. If the Enabler included on the Virex disk is older than the Enabler on your hard drive, replace the PowerBook Duo Enabler on the Virex high density/System 7 disk with the newer version from your System folder. BEFORE you modify the Virex disk, please proceed to CREATING A CLEAN STARTUP DISK.
